Corrie Weekly Update – Bizarre Love Triangles

Mary has convinced herself that Freda has done away with Norris and just as she is threatening her on the cobbles, a taxi pulls up and out pops Norris himself. He explains to Mary that the urn on Emily’s sideboard contains the ashes of Freda’s hearing  assistance dog; that he is engaged to Freda; and he was too scared to face Mary directly about him and his fiancĂ© moving up to Edinburgh. While going through some old photos, deciding what’s to be kept, donated to charity and taken to the tip, Norris unearths some old letters addressed to Mary.

He thinks that Freda hasn’t spotted them but while Norris is out she finds them and takes them to Rita. One of them is open and so she reads it to find a letter from Mary’s old admirer and ex-editor of “The Inexplicable” magazine, Brendan Finch. Instead of giving the letters back to Norris with an ultimatum to tell Mary (as you would expect from St. Rita), she and Freda steam open the rest and find out that Brendan was so in love with Mary that he’d left his wife and was proposing marriage to her, enclosing an engagement ring in the final letter. Mary catches Freda with the letters and sets about reading them all before confronting Norris who insists that he was only doing what was best for his friend and wife.

Mary finds an old mobile number for Brendan and leaves him a message on his voicemail accepting his proposal. In reply she receives a text telling her they have to talk. Brendan’s brother Bernard then turns up to inform her that Brendan had fallen off Striding Edge on Helvellyn 6 months earlier while on a UFO hunt. She’s distraught and takes herself off to the community garden to read the letters from the man who loved her and have a good cry. While there a Robin sits on a post chirruping and she is convinced it has the spirit of Brendan. Freda later dumps Norris and Mary initiates divorce proceedings.

Bethany thinks Ryan should start spinning his ones and twos again and persuades Alya to let him DJ for a couple of hours one evening at Speed Daal. Ryan tries to kiss Bethany but she shies away and he thinks she’s not as interested in him and he thought. Really, she tells her mam, she does like him but she’s frightened of getting involved as there’s been nobody since Nathan. At the “soundcheck”, Ryan is clearly over his rebuff from Bethany as he agrees to meet Alya after his “set” for a drink. Bethany explains her feelings to Ryan who is very understanding and so sleeps with her.

Ryan is late for his DJing performance only just arriving in time to avoid his spot being taken by Geoff and a copy of “Hi Ho Silver Lining”. Quite what Ryan was doing in Ibiza I don't know but he certainly wasn’t DJing. His technique seemed to consist solely of crashing the cross fader from one deck to the other with absolutely no attempt at beat matching. He wouldn’t have lasted five minutes as a DJ in Ibiza. At the end of the set Alex puts on “Don’t Look Back Into The Sun” by The Libertines and Alya runs off in tears. Ryan catches up with her in the community garden and she explains it was Luke’s favourite song when he was going off car racing. In return Ryan tells her that he and Bethany are now an item and Alya’s livid as she thought they had arranged a date and threatens to tell Bethany. She doesn’t need to bother as Alex tells Bethany that Ryan’s gone off with Alya and so Bethany gives Ryan the slap he probably deserves.

Robert goes to lunch at a hotel in town rather than in his own restaurant with his estranged partner Michelle, and bumps into a confused and scared Carla. He manages to get her back to the Street but she runs off before he can hand her over to the Connor family.

Tim wins the heart-age bet he had with Dev and Steve but he’s probably spent more than he’s won on designer spandex, sorry, polyester elastane weave, training clothes. Asha misses a test at school so Dev confiscates her phone, though she has another one. And Paula and Sophie are friends again so go off pony-trekking in Spain.

Ken takes Peter to an AA meeting where the group greets Ken. “Hi, Ken!” they chime. “Hi!” Ken replies, quickly adding. “I’m not an alcoholic, by the way.” But his son Peter most definitely is and there’s a touching scene when Peter begs Ken not to leave him on his own in the house at No. 1 because if he’s left alone, he knows he’ll turn to drink.

Up in Victoria Court, Toyah decides to take the sheets off Leanne and Nick’s bed (and I’m still all ‘urgh’ about this). Under the bed she finds the stolen Health and Safety report that was nicked from Wayne’s car. Nick’s nicked, taken in for questioning and is suspect number one in the factory roof collapse. My money’s on Adam Barlow, wanting revenge on the Connors for taking the factory he always felt was rightfully his.

Sally’s determined to make Tim’s diet heart-healthy, whether he wants it or not. She cooks a vegan dinner but is disheartened to find Tim has been buying crisps and sugary snacks on the sly.

Elsewhere this week, there’s a mix-up over Jan the Polish builder. Mary fancies him, as does Moira and Eileen’s keeping her thoughts to herself for now. Jan doesn’t want to upset Mary by telling her he’s not interested in her, so instead he invents a dead wife to put her off him, saying he’ll never get over his heartbreak at losing his loved one, the light of his life. Jan tells this to Eileen who tells Moira who passes it back to Mary who dumps Jan before they even get started.

But Mary’s got more on her mind when Emily’s niece Freda arrives at No. 3 with news from Norris. He’s in a silent retreat in Shepton Mallett, apparently. Freda tells Mary that Norris wants a divorce and is selling what was Emily’s house too.

Pregnant Gemma threatens to run away and Rita’s distraught enough to tell Chesney the truth, that Gemma is carrying his baby. Chesney finds Gemma on the streets with her bring pink pull-along suitcase and begs her to come home. After much deliberation, Gemma does indeed go home, but not to Chesney. She cuddles up on Rita’s sofa and it was a lovely sight indeed.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Peter’s drinking again, handling his heartache at losing Carla by reaching for the bottle over and over again. After Simon sets up a #FindCarla account on social media, there’s a sighting of her reported. Peter and Johnny head to a squatters house where they hassle a junkie demanding to know where Carla is. She’s upstairs, but it doesn’t seem to occur to Peter and Johnny to even look there for her. Peter heads home, desolate and finds comfort with the whisky. Ken and Simon can only watch and plead.

In other news this week, Bertie’s naming ceremony / christening takes place in the Bistro and it doesn’t go well. There’s a slanging match between Beth and Ken after she reports Ken to the council for not picking up dog poo after taking Eccles for a walk. It’s a stinker of a storyline, in all kinds of ways and not one I enjoyed at all. However, Beth’s mum and nanna turned up for the bash, which was a highlight of sorts.  Kirk sang too, a song about "our souls are beautiful", a joke which fell flat with this fan although I appear to be in the minority of those not enjoying poo humour this week.

Seb meets Alina this week, a young girl working in a nail salon. He falls for her, she’s sweet and he comes clean straight away and tells her he’s got HIV. But what is Alina’s secret and why is she stealing Eileen’s biscuits? Well, it’s the start of Corrie’s human trafficking storyline. And when Alina spies Jan in the Rovers talking to Eileen, she runs out. Could there be more to Jan than we have so far found out? Ooh, I do hope he’s not a bad ‘un, I like him.

Elsewhere this week, Sarah throws Gary out after the truth about Rick Neelan the loan shark comes out. Gary begs Bethany to put in a good word with Sarah for him, but Bethany’s not altogether sure that’s what her mum wants to hear. He moves in with Izzy, for now.  When Eileen finds out that Gary’s been involved with Rick Neelan at the builder’s yard, she bans Gary from it and puts it up for sale. It is still Jason’s, after all.

And finally this week, after the holiday from hell in the caravan last week, Gemma’s got more problems when she finds out she’s pregnant. She hasn’t yet told Chesney, only Rita and Paul know. And Chesney has already decided that Gemma is not the girl for him, she’s too irresponsible and messy, although young Joseph thinks she’s fun. And so, with Gemma and Chesney no longer living together, Gemma moves back in with Rita who’s overjoyed to hear that Gemma plans to keep her baby. She urges her to tell Chesney soon.

And that’s just about that for this week.
