Gemma's mum arrives - and she's been in Corrie before

Actress Jane Hazlegrove has been cast to play Gemma's mum, Bernie Winter.

A baby won’t be the only new arrival in Gemma Winter’s life this year, she’ll also be welcoming mum Bernie to the cobbles. Bernie will burst onto the street in July.

Bernie is Gemma and Paul's estranged mother, an old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit. She is not one to be tied down to a man, a job or any responsibilities, especially when it means hard work for her!

Having let Gemma down this week, when she fails to pick her up as Gemma plans to leave the street, she then turns up further down the line in Gemma’s pregnancy and is soon ruffling feathers.

Bernie does love her kids, the problem is she has never been good at the ordinary things, and after years of being a party animal and a part-time parent she has let them down more times than they can count.

While Gemma is pleased to have her mum around, Paul is more suspicious of her motives, but Bernie is back to support Gemma through her pregnancy and prove she can be a good mum for once.

Well known for her role as paramedic Dixie in Casualty, Jane Hazlegrove said of her new role as the colourful Bernie: “I’m thrilled to be joining Coronation Street. It’s where I started my apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can’t wait to get stuck in."

And it's not the first time that Jane's been in Coronation Street either. Jane played the role of Sue Clayton back in 1985.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 01 May 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday night's part one, wrapped up in handy blog review.

Nasty Nick's new persona is certainly starting to rattle a rather dubious Leanne. What with subtle phrases such as 'the report', 'sabotage' and 'insurance fraud'  being banded around their flat for the past few weeks, Leanne is also starting to square up to sister Toyah, whilst simultaneously questioning her fella's motives.

Mary has had an odd dream about sausage roll men offering her a bite of their heads (hardly Freudian) before ravishing a male manifestation of a scotch egg (I love Mary monologues!). Deciding that the lucid dream is a sign to get back on the dating scene, Tracy soon arranges Mary a date with Polish builder, Jan.

At the kebab shop, the obvious animosity between Chez and Gemma reaches breaking point, and she decides to quit.

Nick tells Leanne he is innocent of any wrongdoing, then thanks her for the support whilst offering her lunch at the Bistro. That is until he's arrested for theft of the factory report. Needing a lawyer, Sally suggests Leanne calls Paula.

Toyah, meanwhile, plays devil's advocate and tries to persuade Imran that Nick may have some subtle motives for the subterfuge.

At the cab office, Tim's struggling to keep up with Sally's bonkers health regime and Eileen is in agreement. Steve seizes the opportunity and subtly invites Eileen around to Sally's for a healthy dinner (kale cookies anyone?).

Brian quizzes Abi on her literary endeavours, as she struggles to conjure up a short story for their English tutorials.

At The Rovers, an upset Gemma seeks comfort in Ryan in the back room, which doesn't go unnoticed by an eagle-eyed Emma.

Questioned by the police, Nick's hardened disposition shows no signs of cracking. As the detectives try to trick Nick, the police also question his financial motives.

Over at Sally's the guests start to arrive for dinner. Spotting Tim's secret snack stash - Sally is not amused.

Leanne thinks that Nick is being stitched up until Shona confesses that she overheard recent admission that 'We've all done things we aren't proud of'.

Is Nick really guilty of reducing the factory to rubble?.

I'll be back soon with a review of the 8.30pm episode.

Speak in a bit!.

In My Corrie Feelings - Part 1

Coronation Street has really made me feel my feelings lately, fulfilling my need for a good cry most weeks. The factory collapse and the fallout has been particularly hard hitting.

As I’ve somewhat been able to start having coherent thoughts about the collapse and all that followed, can I just say, bloody hell.

Easily some of the best Corrie I’ve ever seen, and I say that with confidence. I was worried that I wouldn’t feel the full impact of it as I was late to the party and stupidly scrolled through Twitter, but I have never been so wrong.

I don't think I’ve ever cried at anything I’ve seen on TV than when I did watching the collapse episodes. Kate breaking down after learning that Rana wasn’t going to make it, Imran getting Kate inside the imploding factory, their beautiful wedding vows.

My heart was physically breaking and I watched in horror and amazement at this tragedy unfold with a glass of much needed wine and mascara running down my face.

Imran’s reaction to losing his baby sister was haunting. His anger and devastation affecting his life that would never be the same again. As we watched him trash the flat before breaking down on the floor, it was a harrowing microcosm for what has ricocheted around the Street.

The realism of it all was shocking and breathtaking. I take my hat off to every single person involved in creating these episodes; cast; film crew; makeup; set design – absolutely everybody.

Special credit, though, has to go to Bhavna Limbachia, Faye Brookes, and Charlie de Melo in this storyline. Alison King has also been incredible but I’ll get to that more later. I don’t think they’ve had an opportunity quite like this to stretch their acting as far as Corrie’s concerned but they really knocked it out of the park.

It really is something spectacular when you don’t just watch a TV show, but you feel it. It’s the feeling of needing to sit in silence for a good ten minutes after it’s finished, basking in the dismal afterglow of a tragedy you feel you’ve really witnessed.

After all that had happened, we watched as Rana’s loved ones tried to come to terms with her untimely passing and attempt to piece their lives back together.  There was a lot of shouty Imran, but I’ll forgive it. He and Kate made my eyes glisten once again as they watched Rana’s memorial video in the beautifully lit community garden. Can someone pass me a tissue?

This storyline is proof that Corrie is returning to it’s top game, if it’s not there already. It’s not just this however, there’s a few more characters and stories that have had me gripped. Alas, I’ve realised that if I don’t cut this into parts we’ll be here until God knows when. See you for the next part!

Kym Marsh to star in new TV show

Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor, in Coronation Street, is leaving the show, as we know. She announced the news some time ago although made it clear that she's taking a break, not leaving for good.

And now she's announced that she's going to star in her own TV show called Life Begins.
Kym has created her own TV series with former Hollyoaks favourite Gerard McCarthy. The series is called “Life Begins” but not much else is known about the project at the moment.
